    Hey there,

I have a series that has a different DVD order than release order.

The episodes are generally numbered in DVD order. e.g. a download of s15E04 is the fourth episode in DVD order, but the second episode in aired order - per TVDB's listings. (Let's say for simplicity that the episode is titled "Number Four")

I have set the series to display "DVD Order", and refreshed metadata with "replace all", and it's not changing any metadata, but I just want to clarify how it is supposed to work:

Am I supposed to have to manually rename the file for "Number Four" to S15E02 (the aired number on TVDB) but then Jellyfin will swap the order around so that "Number Four" appears fourth in the list? Or is Jellyfin supposed to recognize that a file called S15E04 is "Number Four" by referencing the TVDB DVD Order list so that I don't have to rename files?

Jellyfin has zero way of knowing what each episode actually is. It relies on you naming the files to match the order you desire.
    Jellyfin 10.10.7 (Docker)
    Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS w/HWE
    Intel i3 12100
    Intel Arc A380

Jellyfin uses the file name's season/episode numbers to match metadata. If you set it to "DVD Order," it expects your files to be named using DVD order (e.g., S15E04 for DVD episode 4). So no, you don’t need to rename files to aired order — Jellyfin will map S15E04 to the correct title ("Number Four") from the DVD order in TVDB, as long as your files are already using DVD order numbering.

To resurrect an old thread, because this problem is coming up again (last time, I just got fed up and did it all manually. This time it's a larger series that I really would prefer not to)...

So what I've determined, assuming my Jellyfin is working the way it's supposed to:

(As a reminder, my example was episode "Number Four" is s15e04 in DVD order and s15e02 in aired order)

is that ASSUMING you have the series created, and you set the Display Order in the series metadata to "DVD Order", it will correctly detect that the file named "S15E04" is episode "Number Four" and give it the correct metadata (title, image, airdate, etc.) EXCEPT, it seems as though it still number the episode as season 15, Episode 2.

In other words, the DVD Order metadata flag allows for correct DETECTION, but not correct DISPLAY ORDER.

Am I missing something? Is my Jellyfin not working right? Or is Jellyfin just not capable of actually automatically displaying the DVD Order without me manually changing every episode number after import?

The other thing I seem to be noticing is that if you do NOT have the DVD Order flag set on initial import, you run into a significant problem (at least I did).  Although many posts suggest changing that flag and then just doing a full metadata replace, I find that once there's a TVDB episode number in an episode's metadata (which there usually is from the initial import), Jellyfin seems to use THAT to identify the episode, and not the filename. So if it initially imports s15e04 as episode 2, Jellyfin will keep thinking it's episode 2 because it will have episode 2's TVDB number.

If anyone has any guidance on anything I'm missing, that would be appreciated.
