I don't know what a pihole is. I assume it's like a Raspberry Pi? The instance was running on my DS918+ and I connected to it from my Macbook Pro running Brave, but nothing else should be connecting.

I installed 10.8.9 for the first time. This time I did not delete the 10.9.2 image and I did not remove Container Manager. I simply downloaded the old image and installed it in a new container. I added just one library and allowed it to scan. It completed without error. Playback also works properly.

I checked the guide section and realized that I hadn't followed the proper procedure for setting up a project in Container Manager. I did so using 10.9.2 and not installing any plugins this time. I had the same result, the library scan failed. This seems to be a problem with 10.9.x as 10.8.9 had no issues.
