Remote connection not working

I am trying to do a simple remote connection outside the network. Running a basic setup with an old 2012 MacBook Pro, 2TB external hard drive, and I am using my provided xfi gateway for internet connection via ethernet. I changed the port to try and see if that would work and used port forwarding through the xii setup but still cannot get a connection outside the home network. I am trying to set it up so I can easily play Jellyfin on clients such as fire sticks and Apple TVs.

so.
On your router, have you port forwarded 8096 to the IP of your macbook?
And what are you using on your macbook to run jellyfin? Is that program bridged or using the same IP as the macbook?

Unfortunately, if you're on Xfinity, then chances are you're under "Carrier-Grade NAT."

Basically, they put yours and a bunch of other homes into the same IP address. This makes you a lot more secure, but in turn, it makes remote sharing of your server a lot less simple.

You could call up your ISP and ask if they'll let you have your own IP outside the NAT. But there are other ways if that's not possible. I ended up using this method  to do it. Basically, you rent a cheap VPS (mine's like $16 per year) and tunnel traffic from your computer to the VPS to whatever device wants to access it. You'll also need a domain, but Jellyfin's guides on setting up a DDNS for your server will suffice. (And that's free.) Since you're on a MacBook, you might not have to install Linux to get this to work, but I've never tried this on one of those before.
