Hi, I'm helping a friend get Jellyfin up and running.  The Server works, he just needs a new routher.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

You mean a network router? What is wrong with his current one?

Thanks for the reply and, yes, network router. He has an old Nighthawk router. When I was helping him set it up around Christmas, we couldn't get it to work. I came across an article telling me that it was an old model that may not work, but I can't find it now.

The router finally died and he wants to make sure he gets one that is compatible. I assume any current router should work, but thought I'd ask here.

Just to be clear, you are not running Jellyfin on your router, right?

Jellyfin is a web application and it couldn't care less about your router (unless you are running Jellyfin on the router).
The only features you might want, as far as Jellyfin is concerned are:
    • Ability to open a port with Port Forwarding or Port Triggering (sometimes these are lumped in with DMZ [Demilitarization Zone])
    • Ability to run a VPN Server to connect to your network remotely.
    • DDNS (Dynamic DNS) for updating your home's IP address with a Domain Name provider.

None of these are requirements of Jellyfin though, and most routers will come with these features.

If you guys like playing with tech / networks, you should look into OpenWrt or pfSense.
OpenWrt is designed to run on standard store bought routers.
pfSense is designed to run on an actual server.

Otherwise, I would go with just about any wifi 6 router.
I run pfsense with tp-link wifi access points these days, but I have always been a fan of asus routers, so if I were to pick one, I would go with one of these:
    • [Great processor and supports WireGuard] https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-s.../techspec/
    • [Good process] https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-s.../techspec/
    • [Will do the job] https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-s.../techspec/

If I were to buy a router today, it would be this one.

    https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt6000/

Already comes pre-loaded with OpenWRT, no frills, no BS, great features for power users, not crazy expensive.
