I ripped my "Friends" DVDs and that's one version, and then I have some TV recordings, which are shorter.

How can I separate them so they show up as different tv shows?

    thanks

You could try naming the show folders as "Friends (DVD)" & "Friends (TV)", then rescan the library.
You'll have to manually add the missing metadata though.

I've tried that but it automatically merges the items into a single entry in my library, and so each Season then has twice as many episodes, with each episode appearing twice, but with slightly different lengths.

AFAIK, there is no way to get the behavior you desire from jellyfin besides keeping them in entirely separate folders and libraries. Within the same library they will always merge the show listing once it has been identified.
