    Hello,

first post here so I hope I'm doing it right...

I set up Jellyfin on my Ubuntu (24.10) server, but had problems with some specific files. I could solve some things with repainring the rights, but I'm stuck with some video files.

These files are TV recordings that I made on my Mac with the EyeTV software. They have/are
    • movie.mpg  (suffix)
    • MPEG2 Transport Sttream   (Container)
    • Video Codec is H.264   (High Profile)
    • Audio Codec is MPEG-1 Layer 2

Jellyfin refuses to play or stream these files, saying "Wiedergabefehler - Die Wiedergabe ist fehlgeschlagen, weil die Medien von diesem Client nicht unterstützt wird" (Playback error - Playback failed because the media is not supported by this client)

This happens on the Jellyfin Web Player and also with the apps on our different mobile systems and also my TV.

If I open the files directly from the folder with with VLC, the file plays as expected. If I use Plex as server the file is also played in the web player as well as in in the plex apps on our devices.

So I don't know how to solve this, especielly cause the problem only happens with Jellyfin itself, so it's not related to the file itself nor the server or the clients...

Transcoding is disabled cause all my other files play as they should so no transcoding needed...

Did you also disable remuxing? I am pretty sure MP2 is not supported in MPEG-TS.

Can you share your server logs via pastebin? And show us a screenshot of the media info as shown in the Jellyfin UI? Click on the "..." context menu for the video and click "media info".

Where would I find these Remuxing settings? Wasn't able to find it right now and could need a hint (and perhaps a hint what do chose if there are several options). For teh server logs I need to look how to get them.

That's the Mediainfo (german, sorry; if you want that in english I'll change UI language and post it again).

I guess this is what you need from the logs:

[2024-11-18 21:56:59.639 +01:00] [INF] User policy for "...USER...". EnablePlaybackRemuxing: False EnableVideoPlaybackTranscoding: False EnableAudioPlaybackTranscoding: False
[2024-11-18 21:57:00.047 +01:00] [INF] Playback stopped reported by app "Jellyfin Web" "10.10.1" playing "Werner - Beinhart!". Stopped at "0" ms

So Remuxing is disabled and need to be enabled, while transocing should be prevented. How and where can I edit the needed settings?

The logs are located in /var/log/jellyfin. Or you can find them in the Jellyfin UI. Dashboard > Logs > log_20241118.log

    Posted too late.

Dashboard > Users > select user. There is a setting to allow remuxing and transcoding. I THINK just allowing remuxing may be enough. But audio transcoding may be required.

Thanks, I didn't expect that this would be a user specific setting...

    So the conclusion and solution:

If I just enable remuxing the video doesn't play directly on the server, but on my TV. Mobile phones show different behavior, some play, some not - but allowing audio transcoding leads as well thoses phone as well as the server itself to play the video. Video transcoding is still disabled.

In the logs I can see what divices just used remuxing or went over to direct stream (nevertheless strange to call it direct stream when at least audio transcoding needs to be enabled)...

So thanks again for the quick help!
