Basically my problem is that seemingly random files are lagging when played through my roku but they function fine when played through firefox on my pc im using as the server.
I can't find any consistency between what files run smoothly and what files don't, but once I identify one that isn't smooth it will never play smoothly on the roku so it's not just that sometimes the server is lagging, some files are just always lagging no matter what.
My dashboard on the pc running the server always says that the files are completely compatible and not transcoding, so it's not a transcoding issue.
Some mp4s play fine, some lag, some mkv files play perfectly, some lag, some x264 files lag, some run fine, some x265 files lag, some run fine. I can't figure out the common denominator that is causing the lag.
When the lag happens, the movies will appear to run at literally like 1 fps, and never improve if you let it pause to buffer (the movies never actually completely stop and buffer themselves either) but the audio plays completely fine without any problems.
I'm completely at a loss, I have no idea why some files run perfectly and some are unwatchable from lag, any ideas are appreciated.
EDIT: almost immediately after posting this I think I found the common denominator, HEVC is seemingly what is causing the issues, all files with it are laggy and all files without it are not.
Edit2: playing the file directly and forcing transcoding has no difference, still seemingly playing in slo-mo 1 fps either way.
Edit3: running the mp4 files through MKVToolNix seems to work, gonna flag as solved since that seems to solve the issues.
