    Intel Quick Sync enough?

Does Intel Quick Sync really make such a big difference?

    Hello All!

I have setup Jellyfin to the point now where I am satisfied with the performance and the quality. Except for one small thing.

Most of my movie collection for now, are dvds that use dvdsub, which not all machines support, mainly phones. So if I want to watch movies with subtitles, I need to do transcoding which my NAS is too weak for.

My NAS has a Celeron N3150, and if I enable transcoding and turn on subtitles, it will have 100% CPU usage on single 1080p Movie. I would like to run 3-4 at the same time.

Can anyone theorize if Enabling hardware acceleration with quick sync, can do that much, or if I will have to live with it and consider getting a better NAS in the future.

    Thank you!

The N5105 can definitely handle a few 1080P transcodes. I was running on a J4205 for a while.

Wow I have been quite the dumb dumb. The CPU is a N3150 not and N5150. I have corrected the original post.
Does enabling hardware acceleration with Intel Quick Sync, have a big impact on the performance, or is it minor?

Very much thank you for your help!

Not sure about performance, but I think Braswell is still supported. The codec support is a bit limited. No HEVC 10bit support, but if you don't have that then it should be good enough for a couple transcodes.

I took at look at it at tried to set it up but the command getent group render/video/input | cut -d: -f3 didn't work. Just nothing showed up.
I might try to set it up again sometime, but not anytime soon. I also gave it a test, and it can do 3 streams, with the subtitles enabled although it is a little sluggish. That will have to do for now.

    Thank you very much Pirate!

    "getent group render/video/input | cut -d: -f3" ?

    https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/getent-com...h-examples

accepts 1 parameter so i hope you meant to say you tried it with each render video and input

    getent group render

same information can be had by "cat /etc/group" or "cat /etc/group | grep video" or "grep video /etc/group"

for "nothing" to show up your groups would have to be borked

Yeah I meant as 1 parameter, just none of them worked. I might try with some of the others you mentioned above, but I'll wait until or if I get complaints from my "users". Many Thanks!
