    Transcoding Advice

    What's the highest 4K resolution/bitrate you've achieved smoothly with an i7-7700 + Intel HD 630 Jellyfin server?

    Hey everyone,

I'm running Jellyfin on an HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF and wanted to get a sense of what kind of 4K performance others have been able to achieve on similar hardware.

    Specs:
    • CPU: Intel Core i7-7700 (4C/8T, Intel HD Graphics 630)
    • RAM: 16GB DDR4
    • Storage: Two 14TB internal HDDs (media stored locally)
    • OS: OpenMediaVault 7.0, with containers for Jellyfin and a
    • Jellyfin Version: [Insert your version, if known]

I have hardware acceleration enabled (VAAPI / QSV) and am using the system as a home media server, with a container for Jellyfin and a separate container for my Arr stack (Sonarr, Radarr, qBittorrent). Some 4K HEVC files stutter, especially those with high bitrates or HDR content. I'm currently optimizing my library using Tdarr and am interested in tuning my playback pipeline.

    I'm curious:
    • What’s the highest bitrate/resolution you've managed to direct play or transcode smoothly using similar hardware?
    • Any tips on ideal transcoding targets (e.g., bitrate limits, SDR vs HDR)?
    • Does anyone use tone mapping (HDR to SDR) effectively with Quick Sync on this chip?
    • Are there limits to how many streams you can handle simultaneously at 4K or 1080p?

Would love to compare notes and maybe push the system a bit further with the right tweaks.

    Thanks in advance!

Check the transcode logs to see what speed you're getting. It could be a different issue (bandwidth etc) from pure transcoding.

An example from a 2160p HEVC HDR - > 1080p HEVC SDR on an intel ArcA380 using the veryslow preset
    Code:
    frame=10843 fps=210 q=-0.0 size=N/A time=00:07:28.65 bitrate=N/A speed=8.71x
