Where to install jellyfin for best result

Hello all,

Need some advise in order to be sure i am headed in the correct direction, as i am lacking some technical experience with this stuff.

I have a desktop with CPU Ryzen 7 5800 and GPU Radeon RX 6700 XT and a NAS DS418play. I need jellyfin in order to watch movies on my TV (Bravia) along with a Samsung soundbar Q990C, so i am hoping for the best possible quality i can get with this setup. I have downloaded the android app on the tv in order to access the movies.

I started using the NAS as a jellyfin server with docker, but judging from the playback errors i got when streaming high quality movies, there must be a limitation there.

Is it safe to assume that the best option here is to install jellyfin on my desktop and use the NAS just for storage?

your post needs clarification

jellyfin has a client and a server component; which is getting an error, which are you asking will run better on the desktop

desktop as a client would be better than android
desktop as a server would be better than a nas

just depends on the errors and which they are coming from

Client will always be on TV, server is the one in question.

So before i deep dive into logs to understand what i am missing in some cases, i suppose it's safe to assume that having the desktop as a server would be better than having the NAS as the server. I am not sure if for example my NAS is able to handle streaming 50 GB remux rips, or playback errors are because of some lack in configuration. But it seems my desktop basic configuration is handling it fine.

then as long as you want to use the androidtv-client on your sony bravia you will need a better server to overcome the client limitations

if you change your client to something that runs CoreELEC (or Kodi in general), you can run your server on a potato because the client will be able to direct play nearly everything so the server will just send files

excellent

"native mode" trys to directly play the file via file direct methods (smb/nfs/etc) where the server just sends a path

"addon mode" plays it normally through the jellyfin http server, allowing transcoding if needed

it is my opinion addon mode is best as it only requires 1 service running (jellyfin http) and i have seen more issues from native but no issues with addon
