Kodi not finding embedded subtitles

Hi. i am using kodi 18.5 leia (windows 10). And there is no way that kodi finds the subtitles inside the MKV files. i opened the file with MPC and VLC and they find perfectly the subtitles. I also tried to open it with the jellyfin web, and it works perfectly. Only kody doesnt find any subtitles. I have been googling and reading post since yesterday to fix it, but seems that the tutorials and forum post i found doesnt work. I also tried to register inside the Kodi forum to ask for support directly to kodi, but registration doesnt accept my email and name ( wich is funny because its my real name and my real email).
Is there any jellyfin users that already had this issue and know how to fix this?

this is the media info from the subtitles contained inside the mkv file:

this is a screen show showing the kodi dont find anything

Since i dont have internet at home, i am interested to get the subtitles from the mkv, not from any internet addon.
I already tried diferent configuration in kodi like changing the default lenguaje to my lenguaje ( Spanish). But nothing worked.
Any idea of how to fix that?
thanks !

Can you provide your logs and any ffmpeg logs you have? It’s really weird. It should be detecting them. Is it this specific file or any file? Can you provide the full media details of the file via something such as vlc

Edit:
So I found this. What if the media was improperly encoded? If the header is damaged, kodi won’t find them. JF and vlc finds subtitles via ffprobe.

https://kodi.wiki/view/Subtitles

Internal Forced Subtitles
If you are using an .mkv file, the forced subtitles may be included in the file when originally encoded. If so, Kodi will automatically recognize that they are present and will display them at the appropriate times. If they are not included, or if the header was not properly edited, you will need to use external subtitles.

Hi, i got all the info you asked, but i cant find how to attach the logs to this post. I also tried to search jellyfin to find how to do it, but i didnt find anything. let me know how to post the logs please.

jellyfin remux log: https://pastebin.com/dl/S2UC68QU

jellyfin transcode log: https://pastebin.com/dl/kPN017br

client (windows 10) kodi log: https://pastebin.com/dl/ZfD7aigZ

i atached the media info from the MKV file and a screenshot from MPC showing that he detects perfectly all the subtitles.

Kodi is not detecting any subtitles from ALL my movies and tvshows.

Thanks for the help !

I made this for you, you can post whatever you want in there, I like to add back tickmarks above and below logs with “```”.

Let’s remove jellyfin from the equation. Can you share your media via samba or nfs and direct play your files in Kodi from the network share?

logs. this works in both the forums and github issues.

i just opened kodi and try to open any files using NFS or SMB, but nothing happens.
I have to say that i have in the leaving room a Synology NAS with a NFS folder with all my video files.
In my PC-server and my PC-client i can access perfectly those files using the window file explorer.

In kodi the only way to see my movies are with the jellyfin plugin. If i go manually in kody to add video source, i am not able to open NFS source, and SMB is just empty.

But since jellyfin can open my movies perfectly, i dont think its a netwrok issue or shared folder issue. Movie is reproducing perfectly, i just dont have any subtitles recognized.

Yeah, I have no clue. It feels like it’s a Kodi specific problem. I would like to try and eliminate the jellyfin variable (such as copying one of the files over locally for kodi or something), but I agree with you and I don’t think it’ll act differently.

Few things we could try.

You could always force transcode and burn in the subtitles to the video itself, with your Synology, this may or may not be powerful enough (and beats the purpose of using Kodi lol).

In the Dashboard > Playback, at the bottom, there’s an option to extract subtitles on the fly, perhaps toggling this might change the behavior

Allow subtitle extraction on the fly

Embedded subtitles can be extracted from videos and delivered to clients in plain text in order to help prevent video transcoding. On some systems this can take a long time and cause video playback to stall during the extraction process. Disable this to have embedded subtitles burned in with video transcoding when they are not natively supported by the client device.

You could also try Jellyfin MPV Shim. It sounds like a Kodi-specific issue. If the subtitles render in either the web app or the one I’m referring to, then it means Jellyfin is definitely picking up the subtitles and there is something strange happening with the Kodi app.

Another useful test would be to transcode the subtitles in the file to another format. Something like this:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:a copy -c:v copy -c:s ass test.mkv

From the transcode logs, it looks like the subtitles are being picked up by Jellyfin. Do they show up in the web player?

i tried that, but nothing changed

in the web player i can see the subtitles perfectly. is an issue from kodi 90% sure. But since we dont have a native client for jellyfin, i supposed that a lot of users use kodi. that´s why i am asking in this forum.
I tried MPV shim, but was unable to even run it.
Maybe i should use the web browser instead kodi.

If you’d like to troubleshoot this, just let me know.
