As two examples, when it comes to extra features:
    • TheTVDB has far more for The Big Bang Theory than TMDB but
    • TMDB has far more for Red Dwarf than TheTVDB

It makes it difficult to decide between the two, and I have far too many TV shows with extra features to be mixing and matching between them manually.

Jellyfin no longer ships with TheTVDB support out of the box (so via plug-in only), so I presume that is the way to go.

    I cannot decide.

I use both, but TMDB first

I came from Plex and had relied on TVDB, and that is where a lot of my metadata is from. I switched to TMDB within the last six months because Jellyfin has obviously moved that direction and because the available images are often higher quality

When I run into a show that has better/more info on TVDB, I change my library's metadata provider to be TVDB, do a scan, check and lock the metadata, then change it back to TMDB. I have it set to keep images and .nfo files in the same directory as my media, and I often go to TPDB to get show/movie/season posters

In other words: consider which provider generally works for you and be willing to occasionally jump to the other one as necessary

The choice between TheTVDB and TMDB often feels like a toss-up for media server fans. It's interesting how TheTVDB dominates for a show like The Big Bang Theory, while TMDB takes the lead for Red Dwarf. Since Jellyfin needs a plug-in for TheTVDB now, it makes sense why many users feel pulled toward TMDB as the default path. Metadata accuracy goes beyond just posters or plot summaries. It's a huge help when creating personalized TV listings.
