Android app external player issue...

When I try to open files in the Android Jellyfin app with an external media player it consistently defaults to the integral media player. I've tried VLC and MPV but neither is recognised. Is there a step I'm overlooking apart from those in client settings?

Are MPV or VLC installed on your phone? They have to be installed separate from the Jellyfin app.

Just to be clear, are you talking about the Android phone app? or the Android TV app?

Other than telling the phone app to use external player, then selecting MPV, which is installed on my phone, I didn't have to do anything else.

Try clearing your Jellyfin android app cache and try again?

So when the file is opened in Jellyfin and begins to play, will I also see the external player open as well in its own window?

It should just start playing.  You'll notice that the playback interface for MPV and VLC will be different than the integrated player.  No icon appears saying that MPV is opening.  It just starts playing and the playback interface is clearly not the same.

All you need is for the external app to be installed on the device. Once the app is installed, it should just open when you play a video like @TheDreadPirate states.

I'm playing audio files. If I open the file in my VLC player on my PC it plays without issue. When I open it in Jellyfin on my phone and it presumably begins playing in VLC there, all I hear is a hissing noise while the progress bar runs.
