Something that I will miss is comment voting. On smaller forum threads, it's quick and easy to speed through and find an answer, but on multiple-page threads with an answer buried on page 17 it becomes tedious.

With votes it would normally bring relevant answer(s) to the top, albeit if the community is to be trusted and hasn't gone full Eternal-September.

We have three main points to try to mitigate this:

First, for troubleshooting threads we have the "Answer" plugin. This allows the OP or a moderator to select a question as the answer to their thread (a la StackExchange), and a link to the answer will show as a button under the OP in addition to the thread itself being marked SOLVED. So, ideally, even if a thread ends up being 17 pages, there's a quick way to jump from the OP to the accepted answer.

The second is less relevant to the long threads, but is of course the reputation system. We encourage everyone to give reputation awards to people who genuinely help them, so that the community can over time self-select for the best people to trust answers from.

Finally, and less automated, but the mods should be able to set custom titles for people. While we're still in early days this will be less relevant until the community really establishes itself, but over time we can ensure that people get "flared" (to use the Reddit terminology) as helpful contributors or subject matter experts in particular areas as warranted.

Forums seem like a step backwards i know everyone wants to stick it to the man but from a usability perspective was nice to have things under one roof

Everything related to jellyfin is now under one roof, this website.

And possibly most importantly, we own that roof and the rest of the house. No one is able to pull the rug out from under us in an attempt to raise their profits.

It’s much better than what we started with if you can believe it… but it’s still a bit rough around the edges. We’ll get there.

How about no? Reddit has become a shithole nowadays so I'm pretty pleased that people are heading back to the old forum models. Hopefully that'll segregate the trolls and the karmawhores to those other places. The price gouging scheme for the api is gonna backfire greatly for them. If RIF dies due to it, then I'm done with reddit too so I'm glad JF devs elected to open up shop for a forum like Kodi, Emby and Plex has already...

Personally I agree. I have no issues with the jellyfin team having their own forums and encouraging people to use them over Reddit. That's not a problem to me at all. I don't like that it feels like they are forcing people to use it though by making the subreddit read only. It almost feels like it's this way or no way. We are right and you are wrong for wanting to use Reddit.

Yes I or someone else could make a new subreddit called /r/jellfinmediaplayer or something like that but all the past posts, discussions etc are all in the old subreddit, SEO links etc will still point to the old subreddit. Plus even if I made a new subreddit I couldn't even post about it redirected people to the new "unofficial" subreddit as the current subreddit is locked down.

If they don't want the hassle or moderatoring the subreddit give that to someone else and just ignore Reddit for good. Surely that's a win win for everyone? The team and people if they choose can pretend the Reddit subreddit doesn't exist and those that still want to use Reddit can.

I had seen the need to individually set up separate accounts on each and every forum you log on to as a real nuisance , but I'd rather deal with that than continue this movement towards a small set of tech oligarchs declaring themselves answerable to no one.   We need to put more effort into decentralizing power.

Now, it would be handy if forums could make use of OpenID (presuming that doesn't get subverted to evil purposes).

Personally I prefer forums, which I guess is just a testament to my age. That said, I'm not too crazy about MyBB. The theme is fine but the forum software itself feels a bit clunky to me. Maybe I just need to get used to it.

I'm actually happy to see the net going back to the way it was - I have hated having to use reddit and discord instead of a local forum.

I just hope the mods here don't put too many sub's in. IMO it's the best way to kill a community. If you compartmentalize too much the community will miss posts and the forum feels dead and people stop coming. I watched this happen with many places that died off over the years. (Xtremesystems for example) The main nice thing about reddit is everyone gets to see every post.
