No server found

I discovered and installed Jellyfin yesterday, replacing Plex. The installation appeared to go fine until I attempted to connect from each of my client devices (3 different Fire Stick devices, one Android phone). None of the devices could see the media server. While I've been using computers of various flavors since 1980, I am no longer as fast on the under the hood stuff as I once was. I was hoping for a refrigerator experience: plug it in and it works.

I'm certain some, if not most of the folks here are tired of helping us old folks, but I'd sure like to get the program to work. Can anyone help, at a fairly basic level? I'm running Windows 11 Home, with Norton 360 (or whatever it's called this month) as my fire wall, on a Google Nest Mesh network. My PC, upon which the media and server reside, is connected to the network via Ethernet, while the rest of the network is WiFi.

nothing wrong with being a veteran, my first computer was a commodore 64

since you state you are using a firewall, ensure ports are configured to allow access - the ports are listed here https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/networking

try accessing the web interface from another device - phone, tablet, computer etc to verify the server is accessible

you may also try to manually add the server by entering the address on the firesticks - http://<serverip>:8096


afaik there shouldn't be anything in the firestick causing issues, i use a cube myself, so i would expect the issue lies with the server

re: windows home as the server, i would not be able to provide detailed instructions for windows because i use linux but the general jellyfin setup should be generic enough

Try going to:

Dashboard -> Networking -> Allow Remote Connections to this server

Make sure that is turned on.


As a insanity checker open a web browser on your phone (while on wifi) and visit your server ipaddress:8096 and the web inteface should pop right up.

since your server is on windows then use ipconfig

Thanks... I think I'm missing something here.... Allow remote... is checked on. I suspect I'm struggling with the meaning of remote. All of my devices are within the network. I've always assumed (yeah I know) that remote was outside my network. Ditto inside or outside of my firewall(s).  Is this not so?

yes, where you installed jellyfin and configured media is the 'server', the firesticks are the 'client'

To figure out your IP press the windows button + R.  Type in "cmd".  This brings up the command prompt.  Type "ipconfig", press enter.  The "IPv4 Address" field is what you want.

Actually, remote connections refers to all connections that are not in the configured "LAN Networks" field.
