The Android TV app (maintained by me) is stable and used by over half a million users. If you encounter issues with it you can use our forum/chat to get help with troubleshooting and if it ends up being an actual bug you can report it on GitHub and we'll work on fixing it.

There have been some reports in the past with Nvidia Shield devices (which I haven't experienced myself on my shield pro) but I believe most of them are either fixed in the app or need to be fixed by Nvidia themselves but in many cases workarounds are available.

    Thanks

Sounds like to me the Sheild is the one to go for, well for at least using Jellyfin.

I'm a android fan as it is, I don't own any Apple stuff.

@niels Is Swiftfin part of Jellyfin a official app?

Edit: I think it is but it's still in beta and is only a video player as I have locked on Jellyfin website.

Still getting the Sheild but just wanted to know.

    Thanks.

I have a 2017 pro Shield model, I run the Jellyfin app @niels is talking about. Its great. I only have 2 issues, which I suspect will be fixed on jellyfin server 10.11.0 release. Primarily, Dolby Vision content gets played as Dolby Vision, not HDR10, and I have a HDR10 tv, that means all Dolby Vision is just a black screen. For those videos I just play it with the Jellycon and Kodi app, but its fixed on next server release so w.e... 2nd, I really really really wish the Jellyfin App had more customization on Android TV. I want Themes! Not a huge fan of the "smart selection". It just leaves the app being pretty bland. Straight forward and pretty in its own right, but bland... O and, this is a jellyfin thing, not a Android TV jellyfin app issue, but transcoding, or media stream rates are determined by bitrate, rather than saying 'I want the stream to be 1080p'. Though that's minor, I just wish I had more info there as to what the playback was actually doing.

quick edit: I also think Swiftfin is a Android phone app, not a Android TV app. 2 different platforms. You might be able to sideload swiftfin, but its designed for touch interaction, not remote interaction. So it can get pretty jank. I tried installing Xbox Live on my shield and it was just not worth the nuisance, since it is a android phone app.

Bonus you can install seerrtv, a app that connects to your seerr instance, and select shows right from the tv. You can even play the trailers. its a sweet setup, though still early in its development.

Sounds good, is it heavily bloated?

The default launcher these days is more focus on selling stuff like movies and less your apps and content.

Projectivy only shows your apps and lots of customization options.

Try both and choose the best for you

New Jellyfin user here. I've been using Jellyfin on my Shield TV Pro for a week or so and have encountered no problems at all. I'm using it all the time for my own use, but unfortunately I haven't been able to persuade the rest of my family away from Plex because in spite of all the awful bloat that it now has, Plex just looks so much better. I echo a previous comment in this topic, it would be great to be able to customise the UI to make it feel more contemporary.

Jellyfin themes only work in the web UI, not the Android TV app.
