I've been at this for hours with no success. I've read forums, watched videos and still can't get a remote connection.

Jellyfin and Tailscale installed on a mini PC running Linux mint. Not in a container as they are the only programs I'll be using.

Jellyfin all setup no issues and on the LAN I can connect no issues and watch whatever.

It's the remote access that just doesn't work. I'm using my Pixel 9 with Jellyfin and Tailscale installed to test the connection.

Tailscale installed and setup no issues on the mini PC and I see it and my phone are both connected.

I've deleted any other VPN's on my phone. Linux mint is a fresh install.

I have Allow remote connections enabled and added a bunch of ip addresses, whitelisted.

I save and restart the server each time I make a change

When I put any of those addresses in the Jellyfin app none of them connect.

I'm lost as to what to do next. I need help!!

EDIT: Should the Jellyfin server be listed under 'Machines" in Tailscale?

Presumably you are using the default Tailscale ACL - "allow all"?

On the client you can use the tailscale IP or the magic DNS name. So you should have something like: 100.12.123.345:8096

...and yes, the Jellyfin server should be listed in Tailscale

On the mint server in a terminal type "systemctl status tailscaled" to check Tailscale is running

Try setting this 100.64.0.0/10 as your whitelisted ip addresses only & make sure to disable "Automatic port mapping" As long as your mini PC & other devices are connected on your Tailnet these are the addresses that Tailscale devices will use. I , too, had this problem for ages. Any other IP address you add later must be an external IP address, not internal. When connecting from your phone, use your mini pc's tailscale address (eg. 100.101.150.63) with port :8096
    Hope this helps,

Turns out installing jellyfin through the software manager installs it in some random folder that I couldn't even find. I just wiped the pc and installed mint again. Then installed jellyfin and tailscale via the command line.

Jellyfin was still not listed under Machines in Tailscale but it was under services. I used the ip from there in the jellyfin network settings and it worked.

    Thanks for the replies
