Syncplay is extremely inconsistent and your experience is pretty typical. Syncplay was created by a single dev and they have since abandoned the project and didn't provide sufficient documentation for the remaining devs to properly support, improve, or fix syncplay.
I'm not aware of any ways to get it to work better.
