When I check an example on mine, I also have the opaque bars on subtitles.
(Opaque bars do not appear when viewing same file in webclient on Firefox.)

Well that's weird, they appear in Chrome, Safari and Edge. I installed Firefox to test it and got no black bars, also tested on an Android and didn't get black bars either.
I am using the latest versions for macOS and iOS. I've seen posts from 2 years ago of people asking about this issue, unfortunately they were unsuccessful at solving it, thought this could have a solution now.
Not sure how to get the subtitle info you asked but i tried with different files and the results are the same, except in Firefox and Android.
