This feature request already is possible.
Platforms that can install VLC should be able to install Jellyfin Media Player (JMP) or MPV Shim. Both JMP and MPV Shim use MPV as the player which works on par with VLC (or if not, possibly better).
MPV can direct play MKV files and ASS subs too.
