Hello everyone!
This is my first posting in the forum. I come from many years using Plex Media Server in Windows and more recently in Linux (MX Linux and now TUXEDO OS). I've had the misfortune to install PMS at least four times since I changed over to Linux from Windows. It had nothing to do with PMS, but having to reinstall PMS or to install it on a new Linux system has been a headache on three of those four times. When I say headache, I literally mean headache. It took me many hours each time to get it installed. It was so complicated and I tried so many different possible solutions that in the end I couldn't understand how I had succeeded installing it. It was always about permissions. If you know Linux, then you can understand how difficult it can be to get programs to work with the right permissions. Support from the PMS community ranged from almost insults against me to one case where the person who was going to help me, from the other end of the World, was very keen to do so.
The most recent time when I had to install PMS was last week after a disastrous BIOS update. I spent three days trying to recover the GRUB menu which was lost and I finally had to reinstall all Linux programs. After four very frustrating hours I couldn't get PMS to see my media libraries. I dreaded going to the PMS community for help. My smart TV set isn't very smart, because it has always had a Plex app but it was only recently that the Jellyfin app became available on it. Therefore it's been convenient for me to use Plex with this TV. Also I recently started using an Android TV box and I noticed that Jellyfin is available on it, but of course it also has a Plex app and this is what I used. Given the problem with PMS not running properly on my PC, I quickly installed Jellyfin.
When I say quickly, I mean quickly, because it was very impressive how easily I got Jellyfin to work. The installation process was straightforward and the potential to improve it through plugins was immediately evident.
My first impressions of Jellyfin are very positive. It already does practically everything that I would want. The potential for customization with plugins, themes etc. and make it fit all my requirements is there. I just need to study the documentation and see other resources that are available.
P.S. Please don't misunderstand me. I don't mean to criticize PMS, but rather to emphasize how good if not better, Jellyfin is. Any shortcomings in installing PMS have to do with my lack of knowledge of Linux rather than PMS itself.
