If you want stability and all the good stuff that JF has, you can stay on 10.10.7 and still have a great experience. If you want cutting edge features at the cost of a more buggy experience, but want to help by reporting, by all means upgrade to 10.11.x. Other projects don't give you options or think about specific use cases. I really can't think of a better way to handle releases without slowing the project development a lot by having ultra beta tested releases (and that get out to the public after a year or two, while losing their feedback).
Just my opinion.
You make a lot of good points and I personally intend to stay on 10.10.7 after far too many issues with 10.11.x - however - in order to do so the clients need to still support it. The xbox app already ditched support for 10.10.x - I'm hoping the others don't follow otherwise it won't be possible to stay on the version which is stable and working. I get that support for older versions would stop eventually but it just seems FAR too quickly for clients to be ending support for a stable version in favour of 10.11 with its huge db change which is breaking so many setups which were working fine.
Edited to add:
Also 10.11 even if it manages to stay running isn't a viable option whole it doesn't work right with "home videos and images" I have a library of family occasions, weddings, parties etc which clearly don't have any metadata online to scrape. Surely these sorts of personal videos is one of the more legitimate use cases of such a media server? I have them all organised by folder and literally just need to be able to access and play them in the same way as works fine on 10.10.7 - Now admittedly I've not been able to fully test these myself as 10.11.x just doesn't stay running long enough but I've read many comments where either folders don't show or are all put into one long list?
