    4k vs 1080p playback

1080p plays fine, 4k files forced to transcode despite what I think should be native support

I just got myself a 4k disc ripper for Christmas. So I was finally able to get a digital copy of my Super Mario Brothers 4K + Bluray combo. I ripped the 1080p version a while ago, both with makemkv, I then used handbrake to convert to mp4 files. On the 4k file I just increased the max resolution to 4k but everything is the same. The results are pulled from my 1440p monitor, but I am getting similar looking results on my LG oled in the living room, with the same reason for transcoding. What is going on here? Is it a file issue or a client issue or a setting in Jellyfin or something else? I have made sure things are up to date, and rebooted the server. Thanks!
Also tried to add a screen shot, can't get it to upload. 4k is washed out compared to 1080p.

SO I'm not entirely sure what's going on here. IS that log you posted from your ripping of the video?
My first question would be why you are using makemkv and handbrake, and not just using handbrake directly? Secondly those numbers seem off. Neither your 4k or 1080 resolutions are correct. 4k is 3840 × 2160 and 1080 is 1920 x 1080 Is your 4k source really only 2 channel audio? I've heard people talk about washed out colors in HDR10, tho I've never had a problem personally. Perhaps look into HDR tone mapping?

It sounds like you don't have tone mapping enabled if the colors are washed out. Also, HDR with H264 video?!

Yeah I'm a bit of a noob here, does handbrake do it all or does makemkv do it all? I just kind of went off of a Jeff Geerling Youtube video and got started down the rabbit hole. It does appear to be an HDR tone mapping problem. Not sure how to fix it.

Okay, I'll have to look into tone mapping on Jellyfin. I'm pretty new to all of this, should I be using H265 with HDR??

AFAIK, HDR is not actually supported by H264. Use H265.

Any client side settings that I need to look into? Or server side? I'll get something into H265 and test again. I tried out plex and it seems to be playing with the raw .mkv file alright, jellyfin still looked washed out.
