Jellyfin doesn't seems to scan subfolders

My movie library is organized this way (inside the root of "Movies" folder):

Jellyfin only detects one movie in the root of "Star Wars" (Episode M.mkv). I keep the folders organized this way because they're more clean and every movie, with its extras, is on its own directory.

Plex (from which I'd like to move away) has no problems finding the movies, and I prefer not to touch the directory structure, as I have tons of movies organized this way.

I think I'm just missing a "scan subfolders" option somewhere, but I can't find it. Is there a way to solve the issue?

    Thanks.

You're using an unsupported folder format.

Each folder in a library is meant for a single movie. You are allowed a single subfolder in depth for things like extras for any particular movie.

    Thanks for your answer.
You mean that I cannot have a folder with a collection of movies (like "Star Wars") and then a folder for each one inside?
This seems a serious limitation, because it means that to make it work I need to spread all my Star Wars movies inside the Movie directory (= Library), having them everywhere. Slightly-frowning-face

    – Edit –
Apparently the problem solved by itself: I moved a random movie inside the Star Wars directory (to see if I was able to create a list of movies and their related extra within the same level) and, after manually rescanning the library, all the existing movies popped out, without the need to change the folder structure.

As I stated, it's not a supported sorting format for Jellyfin.
If you want to use Jellyfin, you will have to change how you sort your media.

Jellyfin uses the folder paths to set up your libraries.
It doesn't go off of individual files unless specified otherwise in the docs.
The docs state you can skip folders and just throw movie files all together without a folder.
But if you're going to be using folders, each folder can only contain a single movie.
Any more subfolders are for extras.

You will have to change how you sort your media.
It may be a deal breaker for you.

Yes, it maybe be a (little) problem for me, as I need to rethink about my whole library (or, at least, multiple movies inside the same collection).

I’ve read the link you shared, and tried several methods to keep more movies in the same folder. I can do it, but then I don’t know how to manage the extras. Or, at least, how to organize extras to keep their original names.

    Example:
    Episode IV.mkv

It seems I can create something like:
    Episode IV - [original].mkv
    Episode IV - [35mm].mkv
    Episode IV - [Despecialized].mkv

But I guess they will be considered variants of the movie (like they are, to be honest) instead of extras (I like to have them not so evident, as I’m not watching them that often).
And, if I use the “- scene” suffix, I’m not able to give them a specific name.

Anyway I’ll be experimenting a bit more about it. For the moment many thanks for the explanation. Smiling-face

    Have a nice day.

Regarding collections, it is not an issue to respect the folder structure and naming scheme at all because Jellyfin creates a "Collection" virtual library by itself

    Example:

I have NOT done anything special with my folders to have this. Its precisely one of the job of the media center to organize and show things the right way, regardless of the storage folder structure, that should be all "flat" and respect standard naming scheme.

This is what you should do to deal with your collection of starwars and their "extras", which are clearly not extras here, but rather different versions of the same movie.

    Movies
    ├── Star Wars (1977)
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) - [original].mkv
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) - [35mm].mkv
    │  └── Star Wars (1977) - [ Despecialized ].mkv
└── The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
        ├── The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - 2160p.mp4
└── Return of the Jedi (1983)
        ├── Return of the Jedi (1983) - 1080p.mp4
    └── The Phantom Menace (1999)
        ├── The Phantom Menace (1999) - 2160p.mp4

    And so on.

If you want to keep them "together" in your folder structure, which I admit is easier to manage, you can also name their folders like this:

    ├── Star Wars (1977)
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) - [original].mkv
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) - [35mm].mkv
    │  └── Star Wars (1977) - [ Despecialized ].mkv
    └── Star Wars - Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
        ├── The Empire Strikes Back (1980) - 2160p.mp4
└── Star Wars - Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983)
        ├── Return of the Jedi (1983) - 1080p.mp4

    └── Star Wars - Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
        ├── The Phantom Menace (1999) - 2160p.mp4

That should work (ie Jellyfin should properly identify them thanks to the year)

But for ultimate best results for jellyfin to parse the right movie, add either the tmdb or imdb ID in the folder name  (AND the file name too if you have multiple versions):

    ├── Star Wars (1977) [imdbid-tt0076759]
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) [imdbid-tt0076759] - [original].mkv
    │  ├── Star Wars (1977) [imdbid-tt0076759] - [35mm].mkv
    │  └── Star Wars (1977) [imdbid-tt0076759] - [ Despecialized ].mkv

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm trying to work with versions (as you said most of my "extra" are just different versions of movies, but I also have extras, but I think I can pretend they're versions and use a good name in the [brackets]". However, after doing that, I see several copies of the movies, and I'd like to see only one (and then select the version from the combo box in the movies details). I also selected them and chose "merge the movies" but, despite the fact they now correctly show the number of versions in the thumbnail, I still see two of them:

Is there a way to only see one?
