Proxmox LXC Not using Intel ARC 380, only iGPU

[MetricConversion]

My goals:
Get Jellyfin to exclusively use the ARC card for transcoding.
Keep the iGPU available for other containers/VMs.
Get HDR tone mapping working.
Learn more about linux along the way.


Issue:
Arc Card shows up in Jellyfin container appears to transcode under VA-API using /dev/dri/renderD129 but not HDR
During documentation and testing I was able to get VA-API transcoding working on renderD129 which was new. HDR tonemapping still crashes.
QSV does not show the option to use another renderer. HDR tonemapping still crashes. 

I'm at a loss, I've gone over the instructions several times, but I feel like I must be doing something off standard. Any advice and "maybe try this" troubleshooting would be VERY appreciated.

The Intel driver will use the first Intel device available, which is usually the iGPU. Your choices are to disable the iGPU in your BIOS or pass in only the Arc GPU into the LXC. Probably /dev/dri/renderD129.

I tried mapping JUST the renderD129, and the by-path directories for the correct cards, but that just flat out wouldn't use either VA-API or QSV.

I will give turning off the iGPU at the bios a shot just to test if that is even a solution.

This might be a whole lot easier if I just moved to a full-fat VM where I could very clearly control the PCI pass through. I have just gathered moving a Jellyfin instance is not a simple task.

Moving Jellyfin is simple as long as the install types are the same. As in docker to docker or package install to package install.

Ok with iGPU set to auto in bios, confirmed its off in Host /dev/dri only showing the RenderD128 which identifies via lspci as the A380.

No dialogs pop up on failure, only hangs.
QSV hangs on everything.
VA-API works, but is slower to start up than iGPU with QSV. This is usable, but obviously worse than iGPU. HDR content still hangs!

I know there are linux kernel issues with HDR conversion, but I'm unclear on how to resolve that. Does it need to be a newer linux kernel in the host or the lxc or both?

How can I diagnose why QSV isn't working?

Ok realized there were some updates for the host, the container, and jellyfin. I'll do some more testing and come back. Initially it looks like QSV might be working?

EDIT: Absolutely not working. I had played a native h264 file by mistake. h265 files, QSV not working and now VA-API is no longer working. This is extremely demoralizing.

EDIT 2: I unchecked Hardware acceleration and now its working? And it shows up as activity on intel_gpu_top? I genuinely don't understand this.

What kernel are you currently running? There are some kernel i915 driver bugs in 6.8 and 6.9.

I'm assuming thats how the LXCs work, they piggyback off the host's kernel?

Yeah. I believe 6.8.8 still has the kernel driver bug in it.

AFAICT, Proxmox doesn't do backporting of patches like Ubuntu and Red Hat. So your options are to roll back to 6.8.4, the release prior to the commits that broke Arc transcoding, or YOLO and update to 6.9.4+, which incorporates both patches that fix Intel Arc transcoding.

Or, like you're thinking, use a VM.
