Hi folks, based on the latest Plex announcements, I've been searching for a replacement .. well, have been for a long time now. Jellyfin fits the bill. I'm curious though why the default metadata provider for any Shows library is the movie db .. instead of let's say the tv db. There is a plugin to add thetvdb, however it seems odd to me it's not installed/enabled/the tv default. Are there issue with Jellyfin and thetvdb preventing this? Is the movie db just better for tv as well as movies? Thanks.

TMDB has a MUCH higher API rate limit than TVDB. Then there is the added benefit (sometimes a detriment) of it being crowd sourced. Don't like how TMDB OR TVDB orders a TV show? Make your own!

TVDB is also, technically, not free. IIRC, Jellyfin paid TVDB a one time fee to allow Jellyfin users to access the TVDB API at no cost to Jellyfin users.

Ok awesome stuff, I'll just keep tmdb as the primary and install the tvdb plugin as a backup, thanks.

This is what I do.  Occasionally I will add a TV show where TMDB just doesn't have the right ordering I would like.  I switch TVDB to be the primary in the library settings, scan in this show while TVDB is the primary provider, once it finishes I switch TMDB to be the primary.
