From what I can gather the option will only allow the files to be stored in the media directory and only the trickplay images. It would be nice if we could set where to store the trickplay and chapters images as they are not so important as the rest of metadata like people and they are so heavy on space.

I am just learning about trickplay. I understand that it allows smooth scrubbing because it pre-generates thumbnails or something along those lines. What I don't know is, are these individual thumbnails for every single frame in a film? I don't think that would make much sense, so could someone please explain to me exactly what's going on? How much storage space is used to have the ability to trickplay/scrub a standard 90-minute movie? I'm curious what kind of space is going to be needed for my library with over 4000 movies.
Currently: 214 TB of media storage

I made a post some time ago that will probably help you understand how trickplay files currently work.

    Check it out here: https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-trickplay-t...1#pid23691

The space used by trickplay files entirely depends on your settings and how much runtime all of your videos take up in total. It's a bit inaccurate to judge the final size based off the disk space used by your media. A 1GB movie can very likely have the same sized trickplay file as a 10GB movie (provided the runtimes are the same for both).

You can mess around with the size and quality of trickplay files to increase or decrease their space used overall. But by far the setting that takes up the most space is the time period between when each video snapshot is taken. Going from 10 second intervals to 13 seconds as an example can drastically lower the overall space used for a whole server. Likewise shortening the interval by a few seconds will result in larger disk space being used for them.

The issue is that if you want more accurate/smoother timeline scrubbing on the OSD bar, you need the snapshots to be taken in shorter intervals, which uses more space.

    Hello there,
I've been looking for the directory you are mentioning but I can't find it... Using Debian here.

This thread started as a docker thread. If you've installed Jellyfin directly on Debian, the directory that trickplays are stored in is /var/lib/jellyfin/metadata/library.

The directory /var/lib/jellyfin is empty inside the Docker container for me. Has it been moved recently? I'm running 10.10.3

I found it, it's in /config/data/metadata/library, which is more confusing because that's mapped to my SSD so it shouldn't have increased the vdisk size.
