    Hi,

I have just converted from Kodi to Jellyfin and I’m loving it! My only issue is - on my Sony TV (running Google TV) there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn off subtitles by default in the app. Can anyone help with this?

    Thanks.

IIRC it finds sub tracks that are tagged as 'Default' in the file

you would need to remove the Default flag with mkvtoolnix

Oh ok. So you mean I’d have to remux my whole library? Seems like a big job. In Kodi there was a setting to disable subtitles by default, maybe this can be added to Jellyfin - can I request this?

    calm down

mkvpropedit included with the aforementioned mkvtoolnix will edit flags without remux and it takes literally seconds per file

    mkvpropedit <file> --edit track:s<number> --set flag-default=0

    documentation here - https://mkvtoolnix.download/doc/mkvpropedit.html

test it out on a single file first, i am confident this is the reason but it's been awhile and i cannot test to verify at the moment

Ah ok thanks a lot! I’ll take a look.

And no need to tell me to calm down - I’m all good, was just curious.

    Thanks again.

    Ok seems to work.

But how would I request it as a feature anyway? Eg my kids like to watch shows with captions but I’d like to have them off by default and then my kids have the option to turn them on if they want to.

I mean the other apps on my tv have subtitles off by default so I feel like it’s not unreasonable to request. Maybe it’s hard to implement?

this is technically supposed to work by changing user settings in the web panel (upper right corner -> user icon -> subtitles)
    - the last time i tried it did not work so as a workaround i remove the default flag

based on that, you could try it and if it does not work you could file a bug report which i never bothered to do
    - https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-androidtv/issues

alternatively there is a feature request section on the forum
    - https://forum.jellyfin.org/f-feature-requests

but that section on the forum does not replace the original feature request method so you would also need to add one there (probably skip the forum)

doing all that was more effort than removing a flag so that's why i just remove flags
