AMD APU for Jellyfin?

Greetings,

I'm new to the world of "Home Servers" but i'm inclined to build one to run Jellyfin in my house for my family. So far, all documentation i found tells me to stay away from AMD if possible.

However, i wanted to build a AMD System since i have strong aversion against Intel CPUs, or rather Intel as a manufacturer (their handling of the Raptor Lake issue was horrible).

Would a AMD Ryzen 5 5600G be suffice to run a Jellyfin Server? Or do i need a dedicated GPU as well?
How resource intensive is running Jellyfin on the CPU? Would i be able to run other applications as well (PhotoPrism, Minecraft Server), or should i have a dedicated Server just for Jellyfin?

Some help/guidance would be welcome :-)

I would definitely call myself an AMD fanboy.  My DESKTOP is all AMD.

But Intel Quick Sync is the gold standard for hardware accelerated encoding.  If you don't want to "give Intel your money" (totally understandable), you could get an AMD CPU (not a G model) and a used Intel Arc GPU.

Having said that, AMD RX6000 and newer dedicated GPUs have pretty good encoders.  I get satisfactory results when I've tested with the RX6800 in my desktop.

But it's not as good as Intel.  Both their dGPUs and iGPUs have better encoding support and quality than AMD.  You also have to be more careful which AMD dGPU you get.  All their models have decoders, but not all of them have encoders.

If you aren't particular about encoding quality, an AMD GPU will be fine. I haven't tried their APUs, but did use a 6700XT for a while and the encoding quality was worse than an older laptop iGPU running Intel I was using before.

I helped a friend set up their Jellyfin server using an NVIDIA card, I think with a 3060. Encoding with these GPUs was far better than AMD's but still somewhat lacking compared to Intel, particularly against the Arc GPU series. If your aversion for Intel is too high and you happen to have an NVIDIA GPU around or can get one at a decent price,  then you can go AMD + NVIDIA to have a decent compromise between encoding quality and not handing over money to Intel.

Thank you very much for the feedback, i will then rather go with a AMD Ryzen 5500 and an Intel ARC Graphics card, hoping that idle power consumption will be "okay" for a headless server

I went through multiple phases of planning the server, from "Ryzen 5500 + Arc 380", over to a Intel N100 SoC, over to a Intel Build with a i3 12100... and now im back to AMD...

Can anyone tell me maybe if this system is feasible for a Jellyfin Server (+ more stuff i plan on doing with it). OS will be Ubuntu or Fedora Server, since unRAID doesn't support ARC GPUs yet from what i read.

All 3 configurations you mentioned are feasible. A lot of users here have N100 based systems and have reported excellent performance for the tiny power usage. I ran just my 12100 for a while before deciding I wanted AV1 encoding and got an Arc GPU. If I were to plan this out again, knowing I would get an Arc GPU, I would have gotten a 5000 series Ryzen CPU instead of the Intel 12100.
