Im trying to watch a .mkv file with several embedded subtitles and that doesnt work. I have a appletv and a iphone, and none can display the subtitle. My mac mini is the jellyfin server with V10.8.11. Cant jellyfin do this? or have i missed a setting somewhere?

log_20231027.log. And if there are any named ffmpeg.transcode, share one of those.

Are there any logs named "ffmpeg.transcode" or something similar. All your playback attempts are requiring transcoding. Is your server an Intel Mac Mini or an M1/2 Mac Mini?

Some of clients don't support some types of embedded subtitles. I don't have any Apple devices so I don't know if this is the case with yours. Try installing the Subtitle Extract plugin. Its in the official plugin repo. Run it in Scheduled Tasks and once it completes there will be additional subtitle options in your videos. See if this works for you.

Just to doublecheck, you have subtitles correct (you can run ffprobe $file and you should see something like: Stream #0:0 Video; Stream #0.2(eng): Subtitle: ass (or whatever format these are in)? As long as you see one of your streams are a Sub stream you have them and it may be a client issue (either unsupported subtitle format or subtitles are not supported). You can 'burn in' the subtitles using handbrake (or ffmpeg) outside of JF. I think JF has burn-in options (Dashboard -> playback -> transcoding and ensure "Allow Subtitle Extraction on the fly" is unchecked) but if you can't select a subtitle stream in the device, then your client may not be requesting/able to see the sub options? In that case the easiest option is probably burning them in outside JF (unless someone has a better solution)
